: there's mud and water everywhere. this is what we're seeing throughout several blocks in this daly city neighborhood. here here on lasaine and price street and police say that it appears a water main broke somewhere up the hill so the water has been gushing down flooding the streets. some cars have water going past their tires. we have some video a little bit earlier. let's bring that up. residents have been waking up. they tell me because of the sound of o hospitallers. they're -- helicopters. there are police out here, firefighters out here. and when residents walk outside and see this, a lot of them concerned. quite a few have been evacuated from their homes and last we heard, they were going to a nearby park. we have yet to speak with any of those people and are still trying to get updates from police and firefighters, but a a big mess clean up here. when we first arrived it looked like there was gushing water and at this point everything seems to be still. maybe they're getting things under control up the hill but we will get the latest information and get back to you shortly. >>>

our arrival. >> fire caused at least $80,000 in damage. >>> this morning, crews in daly city will get back to a massive clean-up effort. we first showed you yesterday a wall of mud and water buried several streets of a neighborhood near hillside park. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in daly city where an aging pipe is apparently blamed for the problem. >> reporter: michelle, you are correct. and city officials say that they are going to work to restore or repair that pipe and they actually admit there could be more in this area. but let's focus on the clean-up right now. last night's cleaning efforts weren't successful in this daly city neighborhood. the water main burst brought about inches of mud down on the road. here's a look from our cbs 5 chopper. neighbors were startled at 4:30 a.m. when police told them to leave their homes. 45,000 gallons of water came downhill. city leaders say it was because of a cast iron pipe made in the 1930s. >> you can see the pipe actually sheared off. we have an aging system. we know that we have pipes in the ground that are probably, you know, close

with erica in a few minutes. >> we begin with the massive flooding in daly city. winner of the reservoir ruptured that sent 45,000 gal. of water down hill. it affected for blocks. the pipe had been in use since the early 1930's. no homes were flooded but 12 homes were evacuated as a precaution. there is no report of injuries. >> cleanup started immediately yesterday morning. as of last night they are putting the finishing touches on the massive cleanup. four streets were flooded. it took time to dig the cars out. here is what residents in the area had to say. >> i was like wow. it cleared out quickly. by 5:00 all the cars on the left side in the mud was gone. i thought it would be longer. i'm sure it would be longer to assess what happened spirit that park is gone. >> has some as i stepped outside everything was covered with mud i cannot see the street. my car was engulfed with mud. when i walked on the street it was up to my knees. >> when we walked out we saw mud all over the place. >> when we first left the house of mud was first starting to, you could see mud covering the grass from

begin this morning with the flooding in daly city where the clean up has begun. we have both nbc bay area's christie smith and bob redell redell with us. we start off with christie smith of the details and what happened. any clean up yet, christie? >> reporter: good morning. it has been a morning and a mess here in daly city. there are front loaders and vacuum trucks everywhere trying to deal with this mudslide. it started with a water pipe that broke off. i wanted to show you what it has done to the hillside this morning as a section came down bringing trees and debris right into the neighborhood. neighbors say it sounded like a storm. water rushing down the hillside along lusanne avenue carrying debris and trees trapping parked cars. it was just to the left of romero's home. >> i was not aware there was a tank up there. >> reporter: what do you think now that you know what happened? >> i'm guessing, you know, infrastructure might be getting old. >> reporter: the gap in the hillside shows where it came from. there is a 978,000 gallon water tank that was 3/4 full. >> it is an eight-i
're tracking daly city flooding. tara moriarty is live on the scene. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. you know, the damage here is pretty incredible. if you take a look behind me here, you can see where the mud and the water ended but it began all the way up the hill where those trees are and this entire neighborhood is just basically -- has mud all over the streets. about two dozen people had to be evacuated off bonnie street. the mud swept down the street. deputy was the first news -- ktvu was the first news crew to arrive on the scene. we saw the water mixed with the mud gushing down the hillside. the brake happening off luzane avenue and bonnie street. crews have it under control. the water has stopped racing down the hill. we spoke to the neighbor who called 911 initial. he said it was scary -- initially. he stayed was scary initially. >> the entire lawn was covered. there was a stream going down the street. i went downstairs and i got on my cell phone and called 911. >> reporter: the mud is up past the car tires at some -- some of the vehicles. several streets are block

the clock in the daly city neighborhood buried by a mud slide. they are trying to shore up the hillside before the rain hits. cbs 5 reporter joe vazquez with how exactly they are doing that. joe. >> reporter: hey, allen. from this perspective you can see the neighborhood here and then way up on the hillside you can see that huge crater where all that water came spewing out of yesterday. it cuts right to left and it barely missed the homes here. now there's another concern, a storm is in the forecast. stacking hay and clearing storm drains, two tasks that have daly city crews hard at work today. the hay is being used to contain the substantial mud still covering nearby hillside park. they will clean that mud up later because right now, they are focused on what they call weatherization making sure the upcoming rainstorms aren't going to do more damage to the neighborhood. it turns out yesterday's mud slide swamped all the storm drains so now workers are having to find them and then dig them out so they can help divert any rain. >> so we're going to take our remote control tv camera to go

, but the daly city neighborhood near hillside park has finally dug itself out of that mess after a water main burst and buried it in mud. cbs 5 reporter linda shows us there are still some concerns hanging over homeowner's heads. literally, linda. >> yes, there are, ken. the river of mud just swept down this hillside narrowly missing a couple of homes, but it did take out this car, one of a dozen parked out here on the street. >> work crews got the streets cleared by night fall. a wall of mud buried these streets. people were startled awake just before 4:30 when police ordered them out of their homes. >> basically we saw just three feet high mud blocking the whole street. >> an 8-inch pipe connected to a water tank in the hills above them ruptured. 45,000 gallons of water cascaded downhill, carving a giant trench, sending a river of mud to the streets, just missing atruro romero's home. >> the mud went the other way, my house and this house going to fall down. >> no homes were damaged but people were helpless as they saw their cars swallowed up. >> like, oh my gosh, god please help us. >> cit
in fairfield. concord, pleasanton, and 38 in daly city. a very chilly morning and afternoon temperatures are not going to warm up quite that much. only 50s and daly city 59 degrees in pleasanton. as we take a look at your extended forecast a slight chance of morning rainfall but into the afternoon drier conditions are expected. we will continue to warm things up on that sunday, monday but mid next week a chance of rainfall is returning we will keep you posted. >> this east bay community is on alert after a suspicious persiaapproached a gl on her way to school. this is not the first fifth time that this same stranger has strictest law were this same child. banta sat in it from a 7:of 20 a.m.. this elementary school in fremont. a 15 year-old girl walking on her way to kennedy high school when she was approached by a strange. the girl refused. he drove away however fremont police say that this is the fifth time that that same stranger approached this 15 year-old girl in the fmonths. he was driving a white suburban, with an asian driver with a heavy built. >> the fact that this is so close
. the cleanup is underway after that flood and mess made a midwest of the daly city neighborhood. tara moriarty was the first on the scene to bring us the dramatic pictures and is live to show us how the hillside has changed. tara? >> reporter: well, the hillside that got swept into the neighborhood, for right now, what the public crews works are trying to do is dig this street out of this landslide. tens of thousands of gallons of water mixed with mud gushed down the hillside. >> the entire lawn was covered. there was like a stream going down the street. >> reporter: he lived near the water creek where a pipe burst. >> i called 911. >> reporter: 40 people had toking evacuated -- to had to be evacuated. neighbors were in bewilderment. this woman's daughter said her car couldn't drive to work this morning. >> nobody can get out of the street. >> reporter: public crews and neighbors spent most of the morning trying to dig out of this. while the city repairs the broken pipe neighbors have much more concerns. does it make you worried it is unstable? >> i think so. >> reporter: now, luckily, no one

in the forecast this week that means crews will be back in a daly city neighborhood this morning. yesterday a water pipe broke and flooded several streets around lausanne avenue with water and mud. amy hollyfield is there live. >> reporter: it looks so much better out here. it is amazing. they still have work to do. this time yesterday we were standing in mud, quite an improvement this morning. they spent all day yesterday working on cleaning up this neighborhood. they were shoveling mud and hauling it out and taking it to a recycle place in brisbane. four blocks of this neighborhood were coated in mud after a pipe broke at 4:25 in the morning that released 45,000 gallons of water. it was rushing into this neighborhood it brought the hillside down with it and a lot of mud. now they are worried about the rain in the forecast later this week. today they will be working onshoring up this hillside park. >> the next three days we are going to be winterizing the park which means putting bales of hay out to absorb moisture, mud and debris, sandbags and everything that we can to secure the park. >>

chopper above the scene in daly city. here's a look at the map to show you where this all happened. a mud slide caused by a water main break which dumped about 45,000 gallons of water into this neighborhood. it turned into a muddy mess. the question now, what about the other aging pipes along the peninsula. let's bring in kris sanchez who joins us in daly city. good evening, kris. >> reporter: hi there, raj. it was about this dark this morning when the mud started flowing down this street in this daly city neighborhood so residents really didn't know what they were going to see once the sun rose, but what a sight it was, they woke up after an 8-inch city water main break broke sending a torrent of 40,000 plus gallons of water down the hillside. it picked up mud, it picked up debris and it picked up steam along the way. residents said it sounded like a storm but when they looked out the window, it was too dark to know what it was. then came the knocks at doors, warning people to get out. >> i saw the police out here and about 5:00 they were here and i could see the water coming down and th

between colma daly city south city 5 to 10 minutes no other mass transit problems. >>> peninsula hotel guests are back in their rooms following a poisonous gas scare. some are not happy. terry mcsweeney joins us live from the embassy suites with what happened. >> reporter: some guests are telling me they didn't get communication from the hotel during this evacuation. i was up in the air and a lot of rumors going around the hotel -- it was up in the air and a lot of rumors, the hotel telling me -- [ unintelligible ] a give was taken to the hospital he carbon monoxide.sopping, -- the hotel sounded the alarm, 500 guests cleared. here is one guest described it. >> it was orderly. the hotel staff i didn't see any of them but the police department was good at directingphobes to get out and keeping everybody informed. once we go in the parking lot i was he said-she said. >> reporter: he didn't see any -- [ unintelligible ] two sides of this issue i can tell you for a fact all guests are back and the hotel is cleared the problem was a boiler emitting carbon monoxide it has been turned off and

are going to up quick i have a feeling. >> they could see another half inch of rain in daly city from this next storm system. shouldn't be flooding rain. outside now it's dry. we have a couple of clouds in the north bay, fog. mid- to high-level clouds moving in especially in the afternoon. the temperatures right now 39 degrees with that fog into santa rosa, 42 in livermore. 46 in san jose. and 54 degrees in san francisco. look what's off the coastline. those spiraling clouds that's your next storm system going to pay a visit to the bay area starting to slide to the bay area throughout the day today. still, we are going to see a very pleasant day. the temperatures not as warm as yesterday but not bad. 60s and 70s yesterday. today close in some spots to the upper 60s but a little bit cooler and those clouds will be on the increase and tonight we could see rain late and then unsettled for the weekend. more or that coming up. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> we are bracing for tomorrow morning's commute. thanks, lawrence. outside, yeah, it's pretty quiet wherever you go.
october 29th. police arrested a second suspect, 19-year-old nicholas hudson of daly city. >> this person was seen smashing out the window and vandalizing the muni bus on the 29th. >> reporter: the public helped track hudson down. >> if it wasn't through the use of social media and help of the public, we probably wouldn't have captured this person. >> reporter: social media also helped police arrest 22-year-old gregory graniss of san francisco. he was caught after this picture went viral. police are releasing more pictures from that night. look at this man dressed in dark clothing and baseball cap he uses a skateboard to break the buses' side windows. the chronicle caught a photo of this man using a barricade to smash the bus' windshield. police still haven't found these two arsonists we showed you last week. you can see them setting fire to the bus. >> they are all felony crimes, arson, damaging the bus, they are all very serious crimes. as you heard from our district attorney and our city attorney, they are going to prosecute to the fullest. >> reporter: the city attorney also promised

a big-time mud and water slide begins gushing down a street. christie smith is live in daly city with all the dough tails. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. you know, the water flow has stopped this morning, but what an absolute mess out here in daly city this morning with mud and water. you can see this right here up the hill, though, the mud is actually measured in feet. crews are out here with vacuum trucks this morning and front loaders trying to clean it all up. higher up there is actually a slide on the hillside. you can see what happened after that water main break overnight on luzanne avenue. one firefighter told me there is a water storage facility up the hill but whether it's tied to this is still unclear. cars completely submerged past their tires in mud this morning. eight homes evacuated. people getting help from the red cross. 100 homes without water. what's going to happen for the rest of the afternoon is cleanup. still don't know what caused this all. jon, back to you. >> all right, tough going out there. thank you very much. we'll check in righ
when the ambulance arrived. live in oakland, ken wayne. >>> police in san francisco say a daly city woman has surrendered, and has admitted she is responsible for a hit and run accident involving a bicyclity. it happened monday in the presidio. the woman surrendered last night, after police reported that police were looking for a hit-and-run driver. the cyclist told us he suffered a major concussion. he also lost his bike, which he says was stuck to the front of the vehicle. the damaged bike was later found. police say the woman apologized, but is being charged with felony hit-and- run. her name still hasn't been released. >>> more problems tonight for toyota. the company is recalling hundreds of thousands of prius hybrids. many prius owners are just now hearing about this recall. >> reporter: frank, many toyota customers told us they bought a prius because of its gas mileage and dependability. tonight, school teacher marian mark drove her 2007 prius to the downtown toyota of oakland dealership to get her tires checked. she told us she wasn't aware of the latest recall. >> if there'

, police arrested this man 19-year-old nicholas hudson out of daly city. he will face felony charges including vandalism and arson. police still looking for more suspects. >>> police have arrested a man who says he broke into nancy pelosi's napa county home. 21-year-old kevin hagan faces charges including burglary and felony vandalism. police say he admitted to break into six homes in the neighborhood near st. helena in the past week. that includes the house minority leader's home where he allegedly stole a watch. investigators do not believe the crime was politically motivated. >>> new this morning, a recall effort against san francisco sheriff could be on the ballot next year. a group of women is expected to announce next week that it plans to try to remove ross mirkarimi from office. the group is encouraged by tuesday's defeat of one of the supervisors who did vote to keep mirkarimi as sheriff. the group would have to collect signatures to put a recall on the ballot. >>> who would get free chicken sandwiches from chik-fil-a for a year? we'll find out. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran
coverage now of that huge mess in daly city. we were the first tv crew there after a water main break flooded a neighborhood. tara is live back there with new footage. >> reporter: just a few minutes ago, crews pulled you and they are assessing the damage. p we had a chance to actually take a like up this hill and get a better look at the gaping hole. wow. we were told it's a 20 x 20. it seems closer than that when you are standing. engineers have inspected the hillside and they say it is -- it sa -- it is safe. >> war ar-- we're gonna keep the rains out. keep in the gully area and sustain and keep it there. >> reporter: now, the main break unfolded 45,000 gallons of water, trapping at least a dozen cars in it's link. the. they have this instrument and then are putting it in different spots. right about this spot. that's about four feet into monday -- mud. so they are assessing everything. this is a very, very large area. it's completely opened up. crews are gonna be out here football -- for probably most of the die. >> thank you. >>> we have more details now on names color damage wil

. crews in daly city are working feverishly to clear out that massive mudslide before it gets even worse. nbc bay area's christie smith shows us what is being done, and why neighbors are still concerned. >> reporter: no sleeping in today. the front loader started at day break at hillside park, moving the mudslide by emanuel romero's home. >> i think if there is anything about the integrity hill that we needed to be worried about, they would tell us. we're assuming things are safe for now. >> reporter: his car was towed back to his house when it was nearly buried yesterday when a pipe broke, sending 45,000 gallons of water, sand, and mud down the same avenue, and now heavy rain is coming. >> if we're going to be bringing in some hay bales and uncovering where the storm drains have been covered over. >> reporter: he says the engineers say the 12 homes that were evacuate ready safe, but they need geotek cal advice on permanent repairs to the hill. for now it's about diverting rainwater. >> once we get the weather taken care we can sequentially take the mud out of the park itself. right now
